The birth of another son…

Published by adhdmom at 2:33 pm under ADHD parenting Edit This

The birth of my second was much different.  It was again a planned pregnancy.  To my surprise we only tried for about two months this time.  Of course since my first was an emergency c-section this was a planned c-section.  Which, I welcomed with open arms.

As my second son began to sit up and crawl he also began to sit in the floor and play.  He is a very intent child.  Playing alone in the floor for long periods of time was what he loved to do.  It was amazing for me and my husband both to watch him.  He has such great imagination. He could lose himself at a very young age in a world of his own.

My older son at this time was approaching the age of four.  We watched him grow with anticipation of what was to happen.  The older his brother got the less he seemed to like him.  While he was a small baby there was no competition however, when my youngest started to crawl around was when the true worries began.

My son began to become overly competitive for attention.  This even went to the point of us having to keep our younger son by our side at all times.  If left along together for even a minute you could hear the baby start crying and our older son looking around squeamishly.

We were terrified that at the age of 3 and a half he could already have such a mean streak in him.  All we knew to do was protect the little one.  When the baby did get hurt we used time outs in his room, corner time, loss of toys, and also spankings (not with a belt or anything don’t worry).  We were so desperate we wanted to try any means we could think of.

Exhausted at this point, we mutually decided it was time to search for more answers.
